มหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023
ที่กำลังจะจัดขึ้น ณ จังหวัดเชียงราย ระหว่างวันที่ 9 ธันวาคม 2566 ถึง 30 เมษายน 2567 ทีมผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายศิลป์ (Artistic Directors) และภัณฑารักษ์ (Curators) ดำเนินงานภายใต้แนวคิด ‘The Open World’ หรือ ‘เปิดโลก’ ซึ่งได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจาก พระพุทธรูปปางเปิดโลก ที่ประดิษฐาน ณ วัดป่าสัก อำเภอเชียงแสน จังหวัดเชียงราย โดยตั้งใจสื่อความหมายถึงปัญญาและการตื่นรู้ รวมถึงการเปิดโลกการรับรู้ทางศิลปะที่เชื่อมโยง ความจริงและนำไปสู่การตั้งคำถามด้วยผลงานศิลปะร่วมสมัย ว่าเราจะสามารถจินตนาการถึง ความเป็นไปได้ในอนาคตที่ดีกว่าอีกครั้งได้หรือไม่
ผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายศิลป์ คุณฤกษ์ฤทธิ์ ตีระวนิช และคุณกฤติยา กาวีวงศ์ และภัณฑารักษ์ คุณอังกฤษ อัจฉริยโสภณ และคุณมนุพร เหลืองอร่าม เล่าถึงที่มาของแนวคิดดังกล่าวว่า ในกระบวนการทำงานเพื่อเตรียมความพร้อมจัดมหกรรมศิลปะร่วมสมัยนานาชาติ Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023 ทีมภัณฑารักษ์ได้ทำการลงพื้นที่สำรวจหลายอำเภอในจังหวัด เชียงรายอย่างต่อเนื่องเป็นระยะเวลาหลายเดือน กระทั่งเดินทางมาถึงวัดป่าสัก อำเภอเชียงแสน โบราณสถานสำคัญคู่บ้านคู่เมืองที่สร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 1838 ในสมัยพญาแสนภู ผู้สร้างเมืองเชียงแสนซึ่งเป็นหลานของพญามังราย
ในขณะที่ทีมภัณฑารักษ์ยืนอยู่ตรงหน้า ‘พระพุทธรูปปางเปิดโลก’ ซึ่งมีพุทธลักษณะ สำคัญคือ ประทับยืนอยู่บนดอกบัว พระหัตถ์ทั้งสองข้างห้อยลงข้างพระวรกาย แบฝ่าพระหัตถ์ ทั้งสองไปข้างหน้า เป็นกิริยาทรงเปิดโลกทั้งสาม ได้แก่ เทวโลก ยมโลก และมนุษยโลก ให้มองเห็น ถึงกันหมดด้วยพุทธานุภาพ ทีมภัณฑารักษ์ต่างเห็นพ้องต้องกันว่าแนวคิดหลักของ Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023 ต้องเป็นคำว่า ‘เปิดโลก’ เท่านั้น คล้ายกับมีญาณทัศนะที่เกิดขึ้นเอง โดยฉับพลัน โดยคำว่า ‘เปิดโลก’ นี้สามารถเชื่อมโยงและร้อยเรียงเรื่องราวทางประวัติศาสตร์ หลายร้อยปีของเมืองเชียงรายตั้งแต่อดีตมาจนถึงปัจจุบันได้อย่างครบถ้วน
นอกจากองค์พระพุทธรูปปางเปิดโลกแล้ว ตัวเจดีย์เองก็ยังส่งแรงบันดาลใจให้ทีมภัณฑารักษ์ ในแง่ของการเป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่สะท้อนความหมายเรื่อง ‘ความหลากหลาย’ อันเป็นหนึ่งในเอกลักษณ์สำคัญของเชียงราย จังหวัดที่ก่อร่างสร้างขึ้นมาบนความรัดร้อยของชีวิตผู้คนหลากหลายเชื้อชาติ หลากหลายวิถีชีวิต โดยตัวเจดีย์วัดป่าสักก็สะท้อนถึงการประกอบร่างของศิลปกรรมจากหลากหลายราก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นทรงปราสาทห้ายอดซึ่งได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากศิลปะพุกาม ร่องรอยของอิทธิพลของศิลปะสุโขทัยในพระพักตร์ของพระพุทธรูป หรือลวดลายปูนปั้นที่ประดับอยู่บนองค์เจดีย์ อันเป็นรูปแบบศิลปะที่รับมาจากลวดลายจีน ทำให้เจดีย์วัดป่าสักเป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่แสดงถึงปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างอาณาจักรล้านนากับอาณาจักรใกล้เคียงในทวีปเอเชีย อันเป็นรากฐานของสังคมพหุวัฒนธรรมของเชียงรายในปัจจุบันด้วย

นอกจากความหมายอย่างตรงไปตรงมาของคำว่า ‘เปิดโลก’ ตามชื่อปางพระพุทธรูปแล้ว The Open World หรือ เปิดโลก ในที่นี้ยังหมายถึงความสำคัญของการเรียนรู้จากอดีต ทั้งในแง่มุม ทางประวัติศาสตร์อันซับซ้อนของจังหวัดเชียงราย นับตั้งแต่สมัยอาณาจักรโบราณ เช่น โยนกนคร เงินยางเชียงแสน เวียงกาหลง และอาณาจักรภูกามยาว (เมืองพะเยา) ซึ่งเป็นจุดกำเนิด ของประเพณีและมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมของล้านนา ด้านสถาปัตยกรรม วัฒนธรรมและ ศิลปหัตถกรรมต่างๆ ตลอดจนเรื่องเล่าความเชื่อและมิติอันหลากหลายทางวัฒนธรรม รวมถึง ระบบนิเวศของเมืองในปัจจุบัน
โดยเฉพาะชุมชนศิลปินเชียงรายซึ่งมีโครงสร้างพื้นฐานที่ดี จนนำไปสู่การรวมตัวกันก่อตั้ง สมาคมขัวศิลปะเชียงรายและบ้านศิลปินกว่า 60 หลัง ทั้งยังมีอาจารย์ถวัลย์ ดัชนี และอาจารย์ เฉลิมชัย โฆษิตพิพัฒน์ ศิลปินแห่งชาติผู้มีชื่อเสียงระดับโลก เป็นแบบอย่างและแรงบันดาลใจ สำคัญ ที่ทำให้ศิลปินเชียงรายหลายคนกลับบ้านมาช่วยกันขับเคลื่อนวงการศิลปะในบ้านเกิด เมืองนอนให้เข้มแข็งและมีศักยภาพ
ส่วนในแง่ของกระบวนการทำงาน ทีมภัณฑารักษ์เองก็ได้ ‘เปิดโลก’ ผ่านการเดินทางไป พบเจอประสบการณ์ใหม่และได้พูดคุยกับศิลปินที่มีแนวคิดน่าสนใจทั่วจังหวัดเชียงราย ความรุ่มรวยทางวัฒนธรรมของพื้นที่ประกอบกับประวัติศาสตร์อันยาวนาน ทำให้เชียงรายเป็น เมืองที่เต็มไปด้วยเรื่องราวและองค์ความรู้หลายแขนง รวมถึงเป็น ‘เมืองศิลปะ’ ที่รวมงานศิลปะน่าสนใจเอาไว้หลากหลายยุคสมัย
คุณกฤติยา กาวีวงศ์ หนึ่งในผู้อำนวยการฝ่ายศิลป์ และคุณอังกฤษ อัจฉริยโสภณ หนึ่งในภัณฑารักษ์ ซึ่งเป็นคนจังหวัดเชียงรายกล่าวว่า การลงพื้นที่สำรวจเมืองทำให้พวกเขารู้สึก ราวกับได้กลับมาเป็นนักท่องเที่ยวในบ้านเกิดของตัวเอง และอยากส่งต่อประสบการณ์เหล่านี้ ไปยังผู้มาเยือนทุกท่านที่สนใจมาชมงานเบียนนาเล่ที่เชียงราย โดยไม่ใช่แค่มาชื่นชมงานศิลปะ เพียงอย่างเดียว แต่อยากให้มาสัมผัสเชียงรายในทุกมิติ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอาหารการกิน ธรรมชาติ สถานที่ท่องเที่ยว วัฒนธรรมดนตรี และวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของผู้คน
Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023 จะทำให้ผู้ชมได้ ‘เปิดโลก’ แห่งการรับรู้ ทางศิลปะอย่างเต็มอิ่มไปกับผลงานของศิลปินร่วมสมัย ซึ่งมีทั้งศิลปินไทย ศิลปินต่างชาติ และศิลปินท้องถิ่นเชียงราย ผลงานหลากหลายรูปแบบถูกสร้างสรรค์ขึ้น โดยนำความรู้ ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับประวัติศาสตร์และความเป็นปัจจุบันของเชียงราย มาตีความผ่าน ประสบการณ์และมุมมองด้านศิลปะที่มีเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวของศิลปินแต่ละคน รวมไปถึงศิลปิน นานาชาติที่จะเดินทางมาจากทั่วทุกมุมโลก ที่จะมาร่วมนำเสนอเชียงรายในมุมมองที่แตกต่าง ออกไป เพื่อเปิดโลกเชียงรายในมุมมองแปลกใหม่ ซึ่งถือเป็นการ ‘เปิดโลก’ ทั้งตัวผู้ชมและ ศิลปินต่างชาติเอง ไม่ว่าจะเป็น เอิร์นเนสโต เนโต (Ernesto Neto) ศิลปินชาวบราซิลผู้มุ่งสำรวจ การสร้างพื้นที่ทางสังคมและโลกธรรมชาติ และเชิญชวนให้ผู้ชมมีปฏิสัมพันธ์ร่วมกับผลงาน, แฮกู ยาง (Haegue Yang) ศิลปินชาวเกาหลีผู้นำวัตถุที่หาได้ทั่วไปในบ้านมาทำการแยกวัสดุเหล่านั้นออกจากบริบทดั้งเดิมและจัดเรียงใหม่เป็นองค์ประกอบเชิงนามธรรม, โทเบียส เรห์แบร์เกอร์ (Tobias Rehberger) ศิลปินชาวเยอรมัน ศาสตราจารย์ด้านวิจิตรศิลป์ที่ Frankfurt Städelschule ผู้สร้างสรรค์งาน เชิงสุนทรียะแบบข้ามแขนง ฯลฯ โดยทีมภัณฑารักษ์หวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่า งานศิลปะร่วมสมัยเหล่านี้ จะช่วยสร้างทั้งบทสนทนาและเปิดมุมมองใหม่ให้ผู้คนเข้าถึงความเป็นเชียงรายอย่างลึกซึ้งยิ่งขึ้น

A New Step Forward for Chiang Rai’s Contemporary Art Scene
Under the Concept “The Open World”
The Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023 International Art Festival is set to be held in the Chiang Rai Province from 9 December 2023 to 30 April 2024.
The event’s Artistic Directors and Curators will be operating based on the concept ‘The Open World’, inspired by a statue of Buddha in his ‘opening of worlds’ posture found at Wat Pa Sak in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province. The concept is meant to convey wisdom and enlightenment, along with an expansion of audiences’ awareness of art based on real-life issues. Through the use of contemporary art, this festival aims to raise the question ‘is it still possible for us to imagine a better future once more?’
Artistic Director Rirkrit Tiravanija and Grittiya Gaweewong, alongside Curators Angkrit Ajchariyasophon and Manuporn Luengaram, have spoken at length about the origin of this year’s concept: Throughout the preparation process for the Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023 International Festival, the curatorial team have conducted extensive research trips into numerous Districts of Chiang Rai over a period of several months. On one of these trips, the team arrived at Wat Pa Sak temple in Chiang Saen, an ancient ruin of immense significance first built in 1295 A.D. during the reign of King Saen Phu, grandchild of King Mangrai and founder of Chiang Saen City.
As the curatorial team stood in front of the statue of Buddha in his ‘opening of worlds’ posture, depicting Buddha standing atop a blooming lotus with his hands held beside his body, palms facing forward. The statue was meant to resemble Buddha as he revealed the three worlds of Heaven, Hell, and Earth for all to see through his power. As if struck by divine inspiration, the curatorial team collectively realized that the Biennale’s theme must include the words ‘Open World’, which is the only term capable of encompassing and conveying the hundreds of years of history in Chiang Rai, from the past all the way to the present.
Besides the Buddha statue itself, the accompanying pagoda also became an inspiration for the curatorial team as a symbol of ‘diversity’, one of the defining characteristics of Chiang Rai, a province that was formed through the interwoven lives of peoples from various ethnic backgrounds and lifestyles. The craftsmanship techniques behind the Wat Pa Sak pagoda itself could be traced back to multiple origins: the five-spired castle design seems to be influenced by Old Bagan art, the facial features of the Buddha statues show evidence of Sukhothai art, whereas the molded lime patterns adorning the pagoda were adapted from Chinese art. This gives the Wat Pa Sak pagoda a special significance as a symbol of the relationships between the ancient Lanna Kingdom and its neighbors in Asia, acting as the foundation of the multicultural identity of Chiang Rai today.
Beyond the literal meaning of the term ‘Open World’ as inspired by the Buddha posture, ‘The Open World’ concept also stands for the importance of learning from the past. From the complicated history of Chiang Rai itself, dating all the way back to ancient kingdoms such as Singhanavati, Ngoenyang, Chiang Saen, Wiang Kalong, and Phu Kam Yao (or Phayao). All of these kingdoms have contributed to the traditions and cultural heritage of Lanna, whether it be through architecture, arts, crafts, to the varied beliefs and cultural diversity – and even the environment – of Chiang Rai today.
This is especially true for the artist community in Chiang Rai, which have benefited from strong foundational structures that have allowed them to congregate into over 60 separate artist houses, including the Art Bridge. Renowned national artists such as Tawan Duchanee and Chalermchai Kositpipat also serve as important sources of inspiration, motivating many native Chiang Rai artists to return home and take part in strengthening the art scene of their home city.
In terms of the work process, the curatorial team themselves were able to ‘open [their] world’ through their travels and experiences, including the many interesting conversations they shared with artists all throughout Chiang Rai. The wealth of culture within the area, combined with its long history, makes Chiang Rai home to many sources of local knowledge, as well as an ‘art city’ that collects intriguing works of art from various eras.
Artistic Director Grittiya Gaweewong and Curator Angkrit Ajchariyasophon, as locals of Chiang Rai, expressed that their various research trips have allowed them to feel like tourists in their own homes once again, with the experience giving them the desire to pass on these emotions to all Biennale audiences. Beyond just coming to experience the art, the curatorial team members hope that visitors can also experience all Chiang Rai has to offer, be it food, nature, tourist attractions, culture and music, or even just the local ways of life.
The Thailand Biennale, Chiang Rai 2023 festival will allow audiences to ‘Open [their] World] to new art experiences through contemporary art, submitted by artists from Thailand and abroad, including Chiang Rai natives. The exhibited works were created by combining the historical knowledge of Chiang Rai’s past and present with each artist’s individual styles and perspectives. This includes a roster of notable international artists from around the globe, who will be presenting Chiang Rai from a different perspective, allowing others to see the city through unconventional lenses that aim to ‘Open the Worlds’ of both audience members as well as the foreign artists themselves. Attending international artists include the likes of Ernesto Neto, the Brazilian artist determined to explore the concepts of social standing and the natural world, often inviting audiences to take part in his works; Haegue Yang, the South Korean artist who utilizes common household objects in her art, separating them from their typical contexts and arranging them into abstract art; Tobias Rehberger, a German professor of Aesthetics at Frankfurt Städelschule, who has created many aesthetic cross-disciplinary works. The curatorial team hopes that these works of contemporary art can facilitate discussions among the audience, revealing new perspectives that allow observers to know Chiang Rai more intimately than before.
